Open letter to Catholic Bishops
Most Reverend Excellencies,
In light of the most grievous wound inflicted upon the Holy Church on the Feast of the Most Precious Blood of Our Lord, I would like to ask you to reflect on a suggestion that also comes from my long-standing contact with the so-called “traditional” world.
It is now evident that there is a grave danger of confusing the defense of Catholic tradition with the denial of fundamental truths of the Catholic faith, which places souls in grave danger.
Particularly exposed to this danger are the souls of those who, partly because of serious wounds caused by abuses of every kind—liturgical, doctrinal, and moral—as a reaction, in the tradition, in the tradition are only looki g for the possibility of not being constantly exposed to ongoing confusion.
Sometimes, the faithful can no longer distinguish between what belongs to the Church and what is contrary to it; everything seems to be fluid.
But there is a very simple way to prevent these souls from falling victim of so many “traditional” solutions that deny the primacy of Peter, the validity of the sacraments “ex opere operato,” the need to fulfill the Sunday obligation by attending Holy Mass, the need for jurisdiction for a canonically valid marriage—not merely one that is ritually beautiful—as well as for sacramental confession, and so on.
It is just needed to allow more widely—perhaps in every diocese—the celebration of the Holy Mass according to the “antiquior” rite, so that the faithful, who desire it, may have access to it without having to take refuge in autocephalous sectarian groups, but rather within the normal course of their Catholic life, within the diocesan territory.
The strength of such groups (and there are many) lies precisely in their identification of the enemy; thus, the more “persecuted” they feel, the less they see their internal problems.
I have extensive experience with this reality, and especially with how explanations and coercion often do not help at all, whereas the simple possibility of trying something different changes everything.
There are institutes in full communion with Rome, with solid doctrine and excellent human and spiritual formation. There are also many diocesan priests, like myself, who would be overjoyed to serve the Holy Church and the salvation of souls in this way. It just requires bishops who want it.
Today is the first Saturday in the month; I find myself in Fátima. May the Immaculate Heart of Our Lady help you to recognise the goodness of this proposal.
I humbly ask for your blessing!
Fr. Francesco d’Erasmo,
Catholic priest,
Fátima, July 4, 2026.
